Having a backup is essential and creating a recovery drive is a good idea. Recovery Drive is mainly used for troubleshooting and restoring your operating systems. This option has been around since the launch of Windows 7.
As we know, Microsoft updates to improve its security and system performance periodically, so we need to recreate the recovery drive annually. We need a USB drive with at least 16GB of storage and don’t forget that it doesn’t backup any personal files and any apps that did not come with your operating system.
Create a recovery drive in Windows 11:
Step 1:
First, insert a USB drive, go to Start Menu, type ‘Create a recovery drive’ and click on it. You might be asked to enter an admin password or confirm your choice and just click on the ‘Yes’ button to continue.
Step 2:
When the tool opens, make sure ‘Back up system files to the recovery drive’ is selected and then click on the Next button.
Step 3:
After some time you get an option to select your USB drive, and then click Next.
Step 4:
Just to ensure you will get a warning that everything on your USB will be deleted, click on Create.
It may take some time because many files need to be copied to the recovery drive. Then, you will get a message ‘The recovery drive is ready’ and then click on the Finish button.

If you ever need to use the recovery drive to reinstall Windows 11 on your PC, see Recovery options in Windows for further instructions. It’s a good idea to back up and Restore in Windows frequently because the recovery drive isn’t a system image. It doesn’t contain your files, settings, or programs.
